Seaweed
Seaweed harvesting has been a traditional occupation in the shallow coastal waters of Rameswaram, India. This industry is mainly dominated by women and has been passed down from mother to daughter through generations. Generally, they are unable to afford proper equipment, so they venture into the rough sea wearing only their saris, a mask, and rubber slippers. Yields have been decreasing in recent decades due to warming waters and a more unstable climate, which reduces the number of working days. Consequently, women struggle to find other sources of income during the off-season. The wide range of uses for seaweed—such as its applications in the food industry, as an ingredient in certain fertilizers, and in medicinal preparations—has increased its popularity. As a result, the government is actively promoting initiatives to support the seaweed industry.
